Just the reassurance we need, at the time we need it most. Thanks Tina…
Whew! It’s been a tough few weeks everyone…
As parents, particularly, you’re dealing with working and childcare from the same spot, and it’s not easy duty.
I decided to offer some relief from the intensity to assure you about anxiety. It’s normal when our lives are this disrupted.
As you read this, give yourself a pat on the back for making it through the past weeks, with the news coming fast and furious, and the need to be flexible at warp speed. Then take a deep breath and just allow yourself to be in the present moment with your thoughts and feelings. (If the dog just grabbed something from your toddler and she’s screaming right now, come back to this when she’s calm.)
Anxiety is fear where there’s no real threat.
So the best strategy is to stop, and ask yourself:
Am I OK in this moment?
Are my kids OK in this moment?
Is there anything I can do to make this moment different?
If your answers are, “Yes, yes, and no,” let yourself relax a minute. Be in the present with gratitude for all that’s right with what’s in front of you. Take a look around and note 3 things that are all right in this room right now.
If you answers are, “Yes, yes, and yes,” take one small action to improve the situation, and then take yourself off the hook for a bit. Go back to the steps above.
Repeat as necessary throughout the day.
When the kids are settled, take a long hot bath or shower because you deserve it.
Short article, because I realize you don’t have time for a long one.
